The Big Bang is
the prevailing scientific model
describing the origin and expansion
of the universe.
It proposes that the universe began
from an extremely hot, dense state
approximately 13.8 billion years ago
and has been expanding ever since.
The model is based on
multiple lines of observational evidence,
including the redshift of distant galaxies,
the cosmic microwave background radiation,
and the abundance of light elements.
From a biblical perspective,
the Big Bang is often discussed in relation to
the doctrine of creation
and the question of whether scientific findings
align with the truth that
God created the heavens and the earth.
Scripture clearly teaches that the universe had a beginning and that God is its Creator. “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). The Big Bang model, while a scientific description rather than a theological statement, affirms that the universe is not eternal but had a finite starting point. Many Christian thinkers see this as consistent with the biblical truth of a created cosmos. At the same time, the Big Bang does not identify the Cause of the beginning, nor does it explain the origin of the laws of physics or the fine-tuning that allows life. Those questions remain outside the reach of the scientific model and point beyond the universe itself to a transcendent Creator.
- The Big Bang model describes the expansion of the universe from an initial hot, dense state, not an explosion in empty space.
- Multiple independent lines of evidence support the model: galactic redshift, cosmic microwave background, and the observed ratios of hydrogen, helium, and lithium.
- The model implies that the universe is finite in age and had a beginning — a conclusion that aligns with the biblical teaching of creation ex nihilo (from nothing).
- The Big Bang does not explain what caused the beginning or why the universe is governed by orderly, life-permitting laws.
- Scripture attributes the origin and ongoing existence of the cosmos to the purposeful act and sustaining power of God.
- Christians hold differing views on the age of the earth and the precise relationship between the Genesis account and scientific models; the core affirmation remains that God is the Creator.
- Scientific descriptions of the early universe can serve as a point of conversation about design, purpose, and the need for a First Cause.
- Beginning of the Universe – Space, time, matter, and energy had a starting point.
- Expansion – The universe has been expanding and cooling since the initial moment.
- Cosmic Microwave Background – Residual radiation from the early hot phase of the universe, detected in every direction.
- Light Element Abundances – The observed amounts of hydrogen, helium, and lithium match predictions from an early hot phase.
- Limits of the Model – The Big Bang describes how the universe expanded after the beginning; it does not explain why there is a universe or what caused it.
- Genesis 1:1 – “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”
- Psalm 33:6, 9 – “By the word of the Lord the heavens were made… For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.”
- Isaiah 42:5 – “Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out…”
- Isaiah 45:12 – “I made the earth and created man on it; it was my hands that stretched out the heavens.”
- John 1:1-3 – “In the beginning was the Word… All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.”
- Colossians 1:16-17 – “For by him all things were created… and in him all things hold together.”
- Hebrews 11:3 – “By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.”
- Romans 1:20 – God’s eternal power and divine nature are clearly perceived in the things that have been made.

The Big Bang model is a scientific description of the early history and expansion of the universe. It affirms that the cosmos had a beginning — a truth long declared by Scripture. While the model cannot identify the Cause behind that beginning, the Bible does: the eternal, personal God who spoke the universe into existence and continues to uphold it by His power. Scientific findings about the origin and structure of the cosmos need not be seen as a threat to faith. When properly understood, they can serve as a pointer to the Creator who made all things through and for Jesus Christ, and who alone gives the universe its purpose and meaning.
