The Image of God is the unique dignity and likeness that God bestowed on human beings at creation.
Scripture declares that God made man in His own image and likeness, male and female.
This image is the foundation of human worth, moral responsibility, relational capacity, and the calling to rule over the earth as God’s stewards.
Though marred by the fall, the image is not destroyed; it is restored and perfected in Christ, the true Image of God.
In the opening chapter of Genesis, God announces His intention to make man in His image and after His likeness. Unlike the animals, human beings are created with a special capacity to reflect God’s character, to know Him, to relate to one another, and to exercise dominion over the rest of creation. The image is not a physical resemblance but a spiritual, moral, intellectual, and relational likeness that sets humanity apart. After the fall the image is distorted by sin — reason is darkened, the will is bent, relationships are broken, and dominion is corrupted — yet it remains. Scripture still speaks of human beings as made in the likeness of God, and this reality undergirds the prohibition against murder and the call to honor every person. In the New Testament, Christ is revealed as the perfect Image of the invisible God. Those united to Him are being renewed in knowledge after the image of their Creator and will one day bear the full likeness of the risen Son.

The image of God is the crown of human identity. It is the reason every person, from the unborn to the aged, from every nation and condition, possesses inviolable worth. Sin has defaced the image but has not erased it; the mirror is cracked yet still reflects the Maker. In Jesus Christ the image is seen without flaw. He is the exact imprint of God’s nature, the true Man who restores what Adam lost. Those who belong to Him are being renewed in that image day by day, and one day they will bear it fully in resurrection glory. Therefore honor every human being as one made in God’s likeness. Treat no one as disposable. And look to Christ, the perfect Image, in whom our true humanity is recovered and our future likeness is secured.
