Pneumatology is the doctrinal study of the Holy Spirit.
The term comes from the Greek word pneuma, meaning “spirit,” “breath,” or “wind,” and logos, meaning “study” or “word.”
It addresses the person, deity, and work of the third Person of the Trinity.
Pneumatology is essential for understanding salvation, the Christian life, the church, and the ongoing presence of God among His people.
The Holy Spirit is not an impersonal force but a divine Person who shares fully in the nature of the one true God. Scripture presents Him as the One who was active in creation, who empowered the prophets and leaders of Israel, who conceived the humanity of Jesus, who anointed Jesus for ministry, and who was poured out at Pentecost to form and indwell the church. Pneumatology gathers the biblical teaching on who the Spirit is and what He does — convicting the world, regenerating sinners, sealing and sanctifying believers, distributing gifts, guiding the church, and glorifying Christ. Without the Spirit there is no new birth, no true Christian life, and no living church.

Pneumatology keeps before us the vital truth that the Christian life and the life of the church are impossible without the Holy Spirit. He is the promised Helper who makes the finished work of Christ real in human hearts, who forms Christ in believers, and who empowers the church for its mission in the world. To study the Spirit is to grow in appreciation for His person and work and to learn to walk in greater dependence upon Him. The same Spirit who inspired the Scriptures and raised Jesus from the dead now dwells in everyone who belongs to Christ, guaranteeing the final day of redemption.
