From the beginning of the church, the apostles confronted teachers who twisted the truth. Jesus Himself warned of false prophets who come in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. Paul told the Ephesian elders that fierce wolves would come in among them, not sparing the flock, and that men would arise from their own number speaking twisted things. Peter and Jude describe false teachers who secretly bring in destructive heresies, deny the Master who bought them, and exploit believers with false words. John writes that many false prophets have gone out into the world and that any spirit that does not confess Jesus Christ come in the flesh is not from God. False teachers may deny the deity or humanity of Christ, add works to the gospel of grace, promote sensuality under the banner of freedom, or claim special revelation that sets aside the written Word. The church is called to vigilance, discernment, and firm adherence to the faith once for all delivered to the saints.

False teachers are a present and perpetual danger to the church. They rarely announce themselves; they creep in unnoticed, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, and use smooth words to draw disciples after themselves. Their message always diminishes Christ, corrupts the gospel, or licenses sin. The safeguard is not cleverness but fidelity — holding fast to the faith once for all delivered to the saints, testing every teaching by the apostolic Word, and refusing any gospel that adds to or subtracts from the finished work of Jesus. Contend for the faith. Watch your life and your doctrine. The Chief Shepherd is coming, and He will judge both the flock and those who have claimed to teach it. Stay close to the true gospel, and you will not be led astray.
