Living Water is the gift of eternal life and the Holy Spirit that Jesus offers to all who come to Him and believe. In the Old Testament, God is the fountain of living waters; in the Gospels, Jesus declares that He gives water that becomes a spring welling up to eternal life. This water satisfies the deepest thirst of the human soul and flows outward in rivers of blessing through the Spirit. It is free, abundant, and available to everyone who is willing to come and drink.
Throughout Scripture, water is a picture of life, cleansing, and the presence of God. The prophets called the people to return to the Lord, the fountain of living waters, whom they had forsaken for broken cisterns. Jesus took up this imagery and applied it to Himself. At the well in Samaria He told the woman that if she knew the gift of God, she would have asked Him and He would have given her living water — water that would become in her a spring welling up to eternal life. Later, at the Feast of Booths, He stood and cried out that if anyone thirsts, he should come to Him and drink; whoever believes in Him, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. John explains that this referred to the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive. Living water is therefore both the life of God given through Christ and the ongoing presence of the Spirit who satisfies, renews, and overflows. In the end, the invitation still stands: let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.
