Abraham was the founding patriarch of the Israelite nation and is known as the “father of faith.”
Originally named Abram, God called him out of Ur and entered into a covenant promising land, countless descendants, and blessing to all nations through his lineage.
Abraham represents the model of obedient faith and trust in God’s promises. His life marks the beginning of the Abrahamic Covenant (Genesis 12, 15, 17), which forms the foundation for God’s redemptive plan. He is the father of Isaac (and grandfather of Jacob/Israel), and his story shows how God fulfills His word despite human weakness and delay.
- Abraham’s faith was counted as righteousness (Genesis 15:6), making him the example of justification by faith long before the Law was given.
- The covenant God made with Abraham was unconditional in its core promises, yet Abraham had to walk in obedience and faith.
- His willingness to sacrifice Isaac (Genesis 22) is one of the clearest Old Testament pictures of substitutionary atonement and God’s provision.
- Abraham’s story demonstrates that God often calls people to leave the familiar in order to walk by faith into the unknown.
- Call from Ur (Genesis 12) – God commands Abram to leave his homeland and family for a land God would show him.
- Covenant Confirmed (Genesis 15) – God promises descendants as numerous as the stars and a land for his offspring.
- Name Change & Covenant of Circumcision (Genesis 17) – Abram becomes Abraham (“father of a multitude”); the sign of the covenant is given.
- Birth of Isaac (Genesis 21) – The promised son is born when Abraham is 100 and Sarah is 90.
- Sacrifice of Isaac (Genesis 22) – Abraham’s ultimate test of faith; God provides a ram instead.
- Purchase of the Cave of Machpelah (Genesis 23) – First piece of the promised land secured as a burial place.
- Genesis 12:1-3 – The original call and the promise that all families of the earth would be blessed through Abraham.
- Genesis 15:6 – “Abram believed the Lord, and He credited it to him as righteousness.”
- Genesis 17:1-8 – The covenant of circumcision and the name change to Abraham.
- Genesis 22:1-18 – The binding of Isaac and God’s provision.
- Romans 4:3 – Paul uses Abraham as the prime example of justification by faith.
- Hebrews 11:8-19 – Abraham listed in the “Hall of Faith.”

Abraham’s life is a powerful picture of walking by faith, not by sight. His story spans from pagan Ur to the land of Canaan and ultimately points forward to the ultimate Seed of Abraham — Jesus Christ — through whom the blessing to all nations is fulfilled.
