Timothy was Paul’s true child in the faith, a coworker in the gospel, and the young pastor to whom two New Testament letters are addressed.
He was the son of a Jewish mother and a Greek father, taught the sacred writings from childhood by Lois and Eunice.
Paul found him at Lystra, circumcised him because of the Jews, and took him on the work.
Scripture presents him as sincere, often timid, proven in service, and charged to guard the gospel.
When Paul came to Derbe and Lystra, the brothers spoke well of a disciple named Timothy. His mother was a believer, his father a Greek. Paul wanted him to go with him. From that day Timothy appears beside the apostle in the planting of churches, in the sending of letters, and in hard assignments at Corinth, Thessalonica, Philippi, and Ephesus. Paul calls him his beloved and faithful child in the Lord, his brother, and a fellow worker.
The two letters that bear Timothy’s name show the weight laid on him:
- preach the word,
- endure suffering,
- watch his life and teaching,
- stir up the gift of God, and
- hold the pattern of sound words.
He is told not to let anyone despise his youth, and he is also told to flee youthful passions. Hebrews says that he was released, as if from imprisonment. Timothy’s life is a picture of second-generation faithfulness: a young man formed by Scripture in the home, trained in the field, and trusted with the deposit when the apostle’s course was nearly finished.

He was well spoken of by the brothers at Lystra and Iconium. Paul wanted Timothy to accompany him, and he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those places, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.”
- 2 Timothy 1:5 – “I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.”

- 2 Timothy 2:1-3, 15 – “You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also. Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus… Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.”
- 2 Timothy 4:1-5, 9, 21 – “Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season… As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry… Do your best to come to me soon… Do your best to come before winter.”
- Hebrews 13:23 – “You should know that our brother Timothy has been released, with whom I shall see you if he comes soon.”
- Acts 17:14-15 – Silas and Timothy remain, then join Paul at Athens.
- Acts 19:22 – Paul sends Timothy and Erastus to Macedonia while he stays in Asia.
- Acts 20:4 – Timothy is among those who accompany Paul toward Jerusalem.
- Romans 16:21 – “Timothy, my fellow worker, greets you…”
- 1 Timothy 6:11-12, 20 – “But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith… O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you.”
Timothy was well spoken of by the brothers, taught from childhood, and taken along by Paul.
He was young. He was sometimes afraid. He was faithful.
The last charge he received is still the church’s charge: preach the word, endure suffering, guard the good deposit, entrust it to faithful people who will teach others also.
Do not despise youth that sets an example. Do not waste a home where the Scriptures were taught.
Continue in what you have learned. Fan the gift into flame. The sacred writings that made Timothy wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus will do the same for those who follow the same path.
