Heavenly Places (or “the heavenlies”) is the New Testament expression for the unseen spiritual realm where Christ is seated, where spiritual forces operate, and where believers are already positioned in union with Him.
The phrase appears five times in Ephesians and once in Ephesians’ broader thought, describing both the sphere of Christ’s exaltation and the present location of the church’s spiritual life.
In the heavenly places Christ reigns far above every power; in the same realm believers are blessed, seated with Him, and engaged in spiritual warfare.
The heavenly places are therefore not a distant future hope alone but the present environment of the Christian’s true life in Christ.
Paul repeatedly lifts the eyes of believers from the visible world to the heavenly places. God has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. He raised Christ from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority. He made us alive with Christ, raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. The manifold wisdom of God is now being made known through the church to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. Finally, the struggle of the church is against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. These references together present the heavenly places as the unseen realm of spiritual reality in which Christ already reigns, the church already shares His position by faith, and the conflict with the powers of darkness still takes place. The believer’s life is therefore lived on two levels at once: physically on earth, yet spiritually seated with Christ in the heavenlies, secure in His victory and engaged in His warfare.

The heavenly places are the true environment of the Christian life. Christ is already there, seated far above every power. In Him every spiritual blessing is already ours. By grace we have been raised and seated with Him. The same realm is the place of conflict with the spiritual forces of evil, yet the conflict is fought from the security of our position in Christ. Therefore set your mind on things above. Live from the reality of your seating with Christ. Draw on every spiritual blessing that is already yours in the heavenly places. Stand firm against the powers of darkness, knowing that you wrestle from victory, not for it. Your life is hidden with Christ in God, and when Christ who is your life appears, you also will appear with Him in glory. Until that day, live as those already seated in the heavenlies.
