From Egypt to Ephesus the Bible names men who imitate signs, read omens, sell power, and bind people with fear. Pharaoh’s magicians copied the first plagues and then stopped. Balaam was hired to curse what God had blessed. Saul sought a medium when the Lord would not answer. Daniel’s world was full of enchanters, and the Spirit in a Hebrew exile put them to shame. In Samaria, Simon amazed the people with magic and then offered money for the gift of the Spirit. On Cyprus, Elymas the magician opposed Paul and went blind. In Ephesus, the name of Jesus was feared after the sons of Sceva fled, and the trade of the occult collapsed in a public fire. Revelation lists sorcerers among those outside the city. The law had already closed the door: no divination, no necromancy, no one who inquires of the dead. Magic arts promise control. They deliver bondage. They treat creation and the unseen as a set of levers. The gospel treats them as theft from the Lord who alone speaks, heals, and judges. Burning the books was not panic. It was repentance with a price. Fifty thousand pieces of silver went up in smoke, and the Word grew.
- Magic is power-seeking without submission. Prayer is asking from a Father.
- Imitation signs do not prove a true god. Egypt learned that.
- The Spirit is not for sale. Simon was told his heart was not right.
- Occult practice and Christian confession cannot share a house.
- Repentance may cost inventory. Ephesus counted the cost and burned it.
- Curiosity about methods is not the same as discernment.
- The name of Jesus is not an incantation. The sons of Sceva found that out.
- Rival Power – Signs and control offered beside the Lord.
- Forbidden Inquiry – Mediums, necromancers, omen-readers.
- Trade – Books, fees, and fame in Ephesus and Samaria.
- Counterfeit – Magicians who copy until they cannot.
- Exposure – The name of the Lord Jesus magnified.
- Public Break – Books burned; the Word prevailing.
- Final Exclusion – Sorcerers outside the holy city.
- Acts 19:18-20 – “Also many of those who were now believers came, confessing and divulging their practices. And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted the value of them and found it came to fifty thousand pieces of silver. So the word of the Lord continued to increase and prevail mightily.”
