Systematic theology gathers what Scripture teaches by topic.
All Scripture is breathed out by God
and profitable for teaching.
The sum of your word is truth.
The topic must not outrun the texts.
Systematic theology is not a book of the Bible. It is the church’s work of gathering what all of Scripture says on one subject. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching. The sum of His word is truth. Exegesis stays on the passage. Systematic theology asks what the passages, read together, teach about God, Christ, man, salvation, the church, and the last things. Jesus said the Scriptures bear witness about Him. A system that cannot pass back through the texts is not yet theology.
- Orthodoxy is the faith once delivered. A system can serve that faith or swell past it.
- The church has always summarized. The baptismal name and the gospel facts are early summaries. A larger system is the same instinct, and it carries more risk.
- Paul reasons from Scripture to Scripture. That is the pattern. The outline is the servant.
Gather the texts. Do not let the heading replace them. The sum of the word is truth. The topic must fit the sum.
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching.
The sum of your word is truth.
Exegesis stays on the passage.
The system must be able to return to the texts.
- Systematic theology arranges doctrine by topic.
- It depends on Scripture being God-breathed across the books.
- The sum of the word is truth, so the texts can be gathered.
- Exegesis is the prior work. A topic page is not a substitute for it.
- Creeds are small systematic statements. Larger systems must stay as humble.
- A heading that the verses will not bear is not a doctrine yet.
- The Source – All Scripture, God-breathed.
- The Sum – The word taken together.
- The Topics – God, Christ, man, salvation, church, last things.
- The Prior Work – Exegesis of the passages.
- The Guard – The topic must return to the texts.
- The Use – Teaching, not a second canon.
- 2 Timothy 3:16 – “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.”
- Psalm 119:160 – “The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever.”
- John 5:39 – “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me.”
- Luke 24:27 – “Beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.”
- Acts 17:11 – “They received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.”
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching.
The sum of your word is truth.
They bear witness about me.
Systematic theology gathers the texts by topic. It is not a second canon. If the heading cannot return to the verses, it is not yet doctrine.
