¶ Types and Shadows
Types and shadows are the earlier forms that point to Christ.
These are a shadow of the things to come,
but the substance belongs to Christ.
They serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things.
The law has but a shadow of the good things to come
instead of the true form of these realities.
A type is an earlier person, rite, or pattern that God appointed to correspond to a later reality. A shadow is the outline cast before the body arrives. Jesus is the substance. Colossians says festivals, new moons, and Sabbaths are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ. Hebrews says the law has a shadow of the good things to come, not the true form. The priests serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. The church reads the shadow in the light of the substance, not the other way around.
- Adam is called a type of the one who was to come. The correspondence is named. Death came through one. The gift came through the other.
- The tabernacle, the sacrifices, and the priesthood are copies. Christ entered the true tent and offered Himself once.
- Not every detail is a type. Scripture marks the correspondences it means. A shadow is not a license to invent a second meaning for every noun.
The substance belongs to Christ. The shadow was real. It was not the body. Read it toward Him.

- Hebrews 10:1 – “For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near.”
