Submit to God is the first verb in the fight
—
and the daily posture of a people who are not their own.
Submit yourselves therefore to God.
Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Draw near to God,
and He will draw near to you.
Humble yourselves before the Lord,
and He will exalt you.
Submission is not collapse.
It is putting yourself under the God who already has all authority.
James writes to people full of quarrels, passions, and friendship with the world. The cure is not a louder will. It is a yielded one. Therefore submit. The therefore looks back at God opposing the proud and giving grace to the humble. Hands cleaned. Hearts made single. Then the devil is resisted, and the flee-promise follows.
Peter says the same in another room: humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety on Him.
Jesus is the pattern. Not My will, but Yours. He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God highly exalted Him.
