Useful for ministry is what Paul says Mark became.
Get Mark and bring him with you,
for he is very useful to me for ministry.
The man once left behind is wanted at the end.
Paul tells Timothy to get Mark and bring him, for he is very useful to Paul for ministry. This is the same John Mark who withdrew from the work in Pamphylia. Barnabas wanted to take him again. Paul refused. They parted. Barnabas took Mark to Cyprus. Years later the apostle calls Mark useful. Usefulness is not the absence of an early failure. It is fitness for the work now, after the failure has been outlived.
- Silas was chosen when Mark was not. Both men serve. The story does not erase either.
- The church does not define a worker by the journey he left. Paul did not. He asked for Mark at the end.
- Useful is for ministry, not for display. The word is service. Bring him, because the work needs him.
Get Mark and bring him with you.
He is very useful to me for ministry.
The withdrawal was not the last word.
- Paul calls Mark very useful for ministry.
- This is the man he once refused to take.
- Barnabas had stood with Mark. The later letter agrees with that hope.
- Usefulness is fitness for the work, not a spotless record.
- Timothy is told to bring him. The useful man still has to be fetched.
- Ministry here is service, not a platform.
- The Man – Mark, once withdrawn.
- The Word – Very useful to me for ministry.
- The Ask – Get him and bring him.
- The Earlier No – Paul would not take him on the second journey.
- The Friend – Barnabas took him to Cyprus.
- The End – Wanted, not discarded.
- 2 Timothy 4:11 – “Luke alone is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is very useful to me for ministry.”
- Acts 13:13 – “John left them and returned to Jerusalem.”
- Acts 15:37-39 – “Barnabas wanted to take with them John called Mark… Paul thought best not to take with them one who had withdrawn from them.”
- Colossians 4:10 – “Aristarchus… and Mark the cousin of Barnabas (concerning whom you have received instructions—if he comes to you, welcome him).”
Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is very useful to me for ministry.
Paul thought best not to take with them one who had withdrawn.
The same apostle says both. The withdrawal was real. The usefulness was later. Bring the man the work now needs.
