Atonement is God dealing with sin by the blood of Christ.
He is the propitiation for our sins.

Atonement is the covering and the turning aside of wrath by a sacrifice God provides. In the Law the priest made atonement by the blood. Jesus is the propitiation God put forward, by His blood, received by faith. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only. Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. The hypostatic union matters here. As man He can represent us and die. As God the offering has a worth no lamb had.
- Propitiation is wrath turned aside. Expiation is sin removed. The blood does both in the texts. Do not keep only the milder word.
- Reconciliation is the result between God and those who were enemies. Atonement is how He did it.
- The church does not repeat the sacrifice. He offered Himself once. The priest’s work is finished in that offering.
God put Him forward. The blood is the means. Faith receives it. The day of the lambs is over because this offering stands.
