¶ Laying on of Hands
Laying on of hands is the church setting a person apart, or praying for healing.
Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands.
The apostles laid hands on the seven, and on Saul and Barnabas when the Spirit set them apart. Paul tells Timothy not to neglect the gift given through prophecy with the laying on of the elders’ hands, and not to be hasty in laying hands on anyone. The elementary doctrine of Hebrews includes instruction about baptisms and the laying on of hands. The sick are anointed, and hands are laid on the ill in the longer ending of Mark. The church uses the act to appoint and to pray. It is not a charm. Haste is forbidden.
- Ordination is this act when men are set apart for work.
- The Spirit, not the hands, gives the gift. The hands accompany the prayer and the prophecy.
- Sharing in someone else’s sins is why haste is banned.
