The anointing oil sets apart the tent, the furnishings, and the priests.
This shall be my holy anointing oil throughout your generations.
The Lord gives Moses a recipe of spices and olive oil. With it he anoints the tent of meeting, the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, and the basin. He anoints Aaron and his sons so that they may serve as priests. The oil is holy. It is not to be poured on an ordinary body, and it is not to be copied. Saul and David are anointed with oil as kings. Jesus is the Christ, the Anointed One, anointed with the Spirit beyond the measure of a flask.
- The holy oil and the holy incense are both restricted recipes.
- Oil on a prophet, priest, or king marks the Lord’s choice.
