A royal priesthood is what God called Israel at Sinai,
and what Peter calls the people of the Son.
You shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.
You are a chosen race,
a royal priesthood,
a holy nation,
a people for his own possession.
That you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
At Sinai, before the calf and before the ordered sacrifices, God tells Moses what Israel is for. They have seen what He did to Egypt. If they keep His covenant, they shall be His treasured possession among all peoples, a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. Priest and king are not two hobbies. The nation is to stand between God and the peoples, and to live holy because He is holy. The Levitical Priesthood later serves inside that calling. It does not erase it.
- The calf shows how fast the calling can be traded for a god they can see. The office of priest is then guarded. Korah learns it is not taken by vote.
- Isaiah still speaks of a people who will be named priests of the Lord. The calling is not retired in exile.
- Peter takes the Sinai sentence and sets it on those who have come to the living stone. Jesus is the cornerstone. The people in Him are a royal priesthood, to proclaim the excellencies of the One who called them.
This does not cancel Israel’s story, and it does not make every believer a Levitical priest. It says the church’s work is priestly and public: offer spiritual sacrifices, declare His worth, and live as a people of His own possession. The priesthood of Christ is the office no one shares. The royal priesthood is the people who stand in what He has opened.
A kingdom of priests was the Sinai name.
A royal priesthood is Peter’s name for those in the Stone.
The work is to proclaim the One who called them into light.
- Kingdom of priests is said at Sinai, before the calf and before Aaron’s sons are set apart.
- Treasured possession and holy nation belong in the same sentence.
- The Levitical order serves within the calling. It is not the whole calling.
- Peter quotes the shape of Exodus 19 and Hosea’s not-my-people promise together.
- The purpose clause is proclamation, not status.
- Spiritual sacrifices replace the grab for Korah’s censer. The way in is Christ.
- Israel’s name is not stolen. The Stone gathers a people who proclaim.
- The Sinai Word – A kingdom of priests and a holy nation.
- The Condition – If you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant.
- The Possession – Treasured among all peoples; the earth is His.
- The Order – Levites serve; the altar is not taken by demand.
- The Stone – Peter’s people come to the living cornerstone.
- The Work – Proclaim His excellencies; offer spiritual sacrifices.
- The Light – Called out of darkness into His marvelous light.
- Exodus 19:5-6 – “If you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.”
- Isaiah 61:6 – “But you shall be called the priests of the Lord; they shall speak of you as the ministers of our God.”
- 1 Peter 2:5 – “You yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.”
- 1 Peter 2:9 – “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.”
- 1 Peter 2:10 – “Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.”
- Revelation 1:6 – “And made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever.”
- Revelation 5:10 – “You have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.”
You shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.
If you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples.
You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession.
That you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
A holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
He made us a kingdom, priests to His God and Father.
Do not wear the name and skip the work. A royal priesthood proclaims. The cornerstone is Christ. The sacrifices are spiritual, and they are acceptable through Him. Come out of darkness. Say what He is worth.
