Ezekiel is the priest who became a prophet among the exiles by the Chebar canal.
The word of the Lord came to Ezekiel the priest,
the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans.
The heavens were opened,
and I saw visions of God.
Son of man,
I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel.
Whenever you hear a word from My mouth,
you shall give them warning from Me.
He lay on his side,
he packed an exile’s bag,
he lost his wife and was told not to weep,
and he saw the glory leave the house
—
and promised a heart of flesh and a valley standing up as a great army.
He was thirty years old when the visions began—the year a priest would have entered full service in the temple that was already under judgment. He sat with the exiles. A storm wind came from the north, four living creatures, wheels within wheels, a throne, and the likeness of the glory of the Lord. He fell on his face. Spirit entered him and set him on his feet. Much of the book is acted prophecy: a brick under siege, rationed bread, a shaved head, two sticks joined. Jerusalem fell, and the news arrived. Then the tone turns from woe to the nations and to hope. I will sprinkle clean water. I will give you a new heart and a new spirit. I will put My Spirit within you. Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. The glory that had gone out the east gate would come back. A temple was measured that the second house never matched. A river ran from the threshold to heal the Dead Sea. His own name is not the point. Son of man is what God calls him again and again—dust addressed by Glory. The church reads him for the watchman’s charge, for the departing and returning glory, and for the Spirit who makes graves give up a people.

The heavens were opened, and I saw visions of God. The word of the Lord came to Ezekiel the priest among the exiles.
Son of man, I have made you a watchman. Give them warning from Me.
The glory of the Lord went out from the threshold and stood on the mountain east of the city.
I will give you a new heart and a new spirit. I will put My Spirit within you.
Son of man, can these bones live? O Lord God, You know. Breath entered them. They lived.
The glory of the Lord entered the temple by the gate facing east. Water issued from below the threshold. Everything will live where the river goes.
Stand on your feet. Warn. Do not assume the walls still hold the Glory. Ask for the heart of flesh. Believe the bones can live. The dwelling of God will be with them.
