The names of God are how He makes Himself known.
I AM WHO I AM.
The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious,
slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.
Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts.
A name in Scripture is not a label. It is a revealing. God tells Moses, I AM WHO I AM. He is the Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He proclaims His name on the mountain: merciful and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, forgiving iniquity, and who will by no means clear the guilty. The seraphim cry holy, holy, holy. Jesus wears the I AM and the name above every name. The Trinity is one God. The names are not three gods. They are the one Lord making Himself known.
- El, Elohim, Yahweh, Lord of hosts, and Father are not competing deities. They are speech about the one God.
- Jesus is given the name that is above every name. The titles of Christ belong with the names of God, not in a separate religion.
- The church does not invent names. It uses the ones He spoke.
I AM. Merciful and gracious. Holy. The name is His revealing. Do not treat the names as a catalog of gods.
