Greater than Jonah is Jesus’ own measure of Himself against the prophet Nineveh heard.
The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it,
for they repented at the preaching of Jonah,
and behold,
something greater than Jonah is here.
For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish,
so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign,
but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.
Jonah ran from the word, spent three days and three nights in the fish, and then preached a sentence to Nineveh. Forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown. The city repented. The king rose from his throne. God relented of the disaster. That was a real sign. It was also a reluctant prophet and a pagan city that believed the warning.
- Jesus stands in a generation asking for a sign and says Nineveh will condemn them. They repented at Jonah. This generation will not repent at a greater preaching.
- Matthew ties the sign to the three days and three nights. The fish was the pattern. The heart of the earth is the fulfillment.
- Luke sets the same verdict beside something greater than Solomon. Wisdom and repentance stand in one judgment scene.
The point is not that Jonah was small. The point is that the sign they already knew has arrived in person. No other sign is offered to an evil and adulterous generation. The men of Nineveh will rise because they turned at a short sermon. Repentance was the fruit of Jonah’s preaching. The greater fruit is faith in the One who was three days in the earth and rose.
The sign of Jonah is not a trick they can order.
It is the Son,
three days in the heart of the earth,
and greater than the prophet they already believed.
- Greater than Jonah is Jesus’ comparison, not a slight on the prophet who finally preached.
- Nineveh’s repentance is the rebuke. A pagan city turned. This generation asks for another sign.
- Three days and three nights is the sign He gives. The fish points at the grave.
- No sign will be given except this one. The request for more is refused.
- Paired with greater than Solomon: a queen for wisdom, a city for repentance.
- Jonah sulked when mercy came. The greater One is the mercy.
- Judgment day gives Nineveh a voice against people who had the greater preaching and did not turn.
- The Prophet – Ran; three days in the fish; preached one sentence.
- The City – Nineveh believed; sackcloth; God relented.
- The Sign – Three days and three nights; the heart of the earth.
- The Refusal – An evil and adulterous generation; no other sign.
- The Verdict – Nineveh will rise and condemn this generation.
- The Pair – Greater than Solomon; wisdom and repentance.
- The Greater – The Son in the grave and out of it.
- Matthew 12:39-41 – “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.”
- Luke 11:29-32 – “This generation is an evil generation. It seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah… The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.”
- Matthew 16:4 – “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.”
- Jonah 1:17 – “And the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.”
- Jonah 2:1-2 – “Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish, saying, ‘I called out to the Lord, out of my distress, and he answered me.’”
- Jonah 3:4-5 – “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown! And the people of Nineveh believed God. They called for a fast and put on sackcloth.”
- Jonah 3:10 – “When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.”
- Jonah 4:1-2 – “But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry… for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.”
- Matthew 12:42 – “The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it… and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.”
- Luke 11:30 – “For as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be to this generation.”
The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.
As Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
No sign will be given except the sign of Jonah.
The people of Nineveh believed God. God relented of the disaster.
Jonah was angry. He knew the Lord was gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
Do not ask for a better sign than the one He gave. Nineveh turned at a sentence. The greater preaching is the Son, three days in the earth. Repent at Him. A city that believed Jonah will not be silent about a generation that would not.
