If thy brother be waxen poor,
and hath sold away some of his possession,
then shall his kinsman that is next unto him
come and redeem that which his brother sold.
The kinsman-redeemer is the near relative who buys back what his brother lost. The law named him. He redeems the land. He raises up the name of the dead. Boaz did this for Ruth and for the name of Elimelech. The nearer kinsman would not. Boaz would. Jesus is the kinsman who can. He took flesh, so He is near. He paid the price, so He can redeem. He is the Redeemer. The kinsman-redeemer is that office in the law, and Boaz is the picture.
