Blind Bartimaeus is the beggar at Jericho who would not be hushed and went away seeing.
Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.
He began to cry out,
Jesus,
Son of David,
have mercy on me!
Many rebuked him,
telling him to be silent.
But he cried out all the more,
Son of David,
have mercy on me!
What do you want Me to do for you?
Rabbi, let me recover my sight.
Go your way; your faith has made you well.
Immediately he recovered his sight and followed Him on the way.
Mark keeps his name: son of Timaeus.
The last beggar before Jerusalem would not take silence as an answer.
They were leaving Jericho. A crowd and a road and a man who cannot see but can hear a name. Son of David is Messiah language on a beggar’s mouth while the Twelve are still arguing seats. The crowd treats him as noise. He treats their rebuke as fuel. Jesus stops. Call him. Take heart. Get up. He throws off his cloak—the beggar’s gear, perhaps his only floor—and comes. What do you want Me to do for you? is the same question James and John had just heard and answered with thrones. Bartimaeus asks for sight. Recover is the verb of something that should have been his. Faith is named. Sight is immediate. Following is the next sentence, not a later chapter. Matthew tells of two blind men at Jericho with the same cry. Luke sets a blind man as they drew near the city. Mark gives the name so the church will not lose the man in the miracle. Isaiah said the eyes of the blind shall be opened. The road to the cross begins with a seeing disciple who used to sit in the dirt.

- Be silent is the crowd’s liturgy. He will not learn it.
- Throw off the cloak is how hope travels light.
- What do you want Me to do for you? sorts ambition from mercy.
- Immediately he sees and follows—sight is for the way, not for the mat.
- Your faith has made you well ties the gift to trust, not to volume alone.
- The last healing on the road to Jerusalem is a man who refused to stay quiet.

But he cried out all the more, ‘Son of David, have mercy on me!’ And Jesus stopped and said, ‘Call him.’ And they called the blind man, saying to him, ‘Take heart. Get up; he is calling you.’ And throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. And Jesus said to him, ‘What do you want me to do for you?’ And the blind man said to him, ‘Rabbi, let me recover my sight.’ And Jesus said to him, ‘Go your way; your faith has made you well.’ And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him on the way.”

Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! Many rebuked him. He cried out all the more.
Take heart. Get up; He is calling you. He threw off his cloak and came.
What do you want Me to do for you? Rabbi, let me recover my sight.
Your faith has made you well. Immediately he recovered his sight and followed Him on the way.
The Lord opens the eyes of the blind. He has sent Me to proclaim recovering of sight to the blind.
Do not let the crowd train you to whisper. Use the name. Ask for mercy. Drop the cloak. Answer the question with need, not thrones. See—and follow Him on the way up.
