Mary the mother of James stood at the cross and came to the tomb.
Mary the mother of James and Joseph,
and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
She is often called the other Mary.
Mary the mother of James and Joseph, or Joses, is named among the women at the cross and at the tomb. Matthew calls her the other Mary, beside Mary Magdelene. She saw where the body of Jesus was laid, and she came at dawn with spices. She is not His mother, Mary. James here is not automatically James the son of Zebedee. Mark distinguishes the mother of the sons of Zebedee’s circle by naming this Mary as the mother of James the younger and of Joses.
- The other Mary sat opposite the tomb after the burial.
- She was among the women who told the apostles, and among those who met the risen Jesus.
- The church sometimes identifies her with Mary the wife of Clopas. The texts put them in the same company. They do not finish the identification.
