False gods are the lords men make and serve beside the Lord.
All the gods of the peoples are worthless idols,
but the Lord made the heavens.
Gods made with hands are not gods.
You turned to God from idols
to serve the living and true God.
A false god is not a second true lord. Scripture calls them worthless idols, no gods, the work of hands. God made the heavens. They did not. Israel meets them as Baal and as Baal of Peor. Ephesus meets them as Artemis, and Demetrius sells the shrine. Paul says gods made with hands are not gods. The church in Thessalonica turned from idols to serve the living and true God.
- Idolatry is the worship. False gods are the objects and the names of that worship.
- Behind some of the service is more than wood. Paul says what pagans sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God. The idol is nothing. The table can still be a demon’s table.
- Jesus does not share the throne. A church can hold His name and still eat what belongs to a false god. He calls that the teaching of Balaam.
Do not give them dignity they do not have. Do not treat them as harmless crafts. They are not gods. Serving them is turning from the living God.
