The Book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and the fourth book of the Pentateuch (the first five books of Moses). Its English name comes from the two major censuses (numberings) of the Israelites recorded in the book. In Hebrew, it is called Bamidbar, which means “In the Wilderness.”
The Book of Numbers covers the approximately forty years the Israelites spent wandering in the wilderness after leaving Egypt and before entering the Promised Land. It bridges the gap between the giving of the Law at Mount Sinai (Exodus and Leviticus) and the preparation to enter Canaan (Deuteronomy and Joshua).
The book begins with the nation organized and ready to march into the land, but because of unbelief and rebellion, an entire generation dies in the wilderness. It ends with a new generation prepared to enter the land under Joshua’s leadership.

The Book of Numbers can be divided into three main sections:
- Preparation at Sinai (Chapters 1–10) The first census, organization of the tribes, laws, and the departure from Mount Sinai.
- Wandering in the Wilderness (Chapters 11–25) Complaints, rebellion (including Korah’s rebellion), the sending of the twelve spies, God’s judgment that the unbelieving generation would die in the wilderness, and the story of Balaam and Balak.
- Preparation for Entering the Land (Chapters 26–36) The second census (of the new generation), additional laws, the appointment of Joshua, and instructions for dividing the land.

- Numbers 21:8-9 — Then the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and it shall be that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live.”
- Numbers 23:19 — God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?
The Book of Numbers contains many important lessons for believers today:
