Faith is

and confident reliance
upon God and His Word.
It is more than intellectual agreement
—
it is a personal trust that leads to action and obedience.
¶ Biblical Understanding of Faith
In the Bible, faith is the means by which we receive salvation and by which we live the Christian life. It is the opposite of self-reliance or works-based righteousness. Faith looks away from self and trusts completely in God’s character, promises, and finished work in Christ.
The most well-known definition of faith is found in Hebrews 11:1: “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
Faith is essential because “without faith it is impossible to please Him” (Hebrews 11:6). God is pleased when His people trust Him, even when they cannot see the outcome.
- Saving Faith — Trusting in Jesus Christ alone for salvation (Ephesians 2:8-9).
- Living Faith — Daily dependence on God in every area of life.
- Faith and Works — True faith produces good works, but salvation is received by faith alone, not by works.
- Growing Faith — Faith can grow and mature as we walk with God and study His Word.
- Examples of Faith — Hebrews 11 gives many examples of people who lived by faith (Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Moses, etc.).
- Ephesians 2:8-9 — For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.
- Hebrews 11:1 — Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
- Hebrews 11:6 — But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
- Romans 10:17 — So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
- 2 Corinthians 5:7 — For we walk by faith, not by sight.
- James 2:17 — Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
Understanding faith has powerful implications for daily life:
- Salvation is received by faith in Jesus Christ, not by good works.
- Faith gives us peace and assurance, knowing that God is trustworthy.
- Faith enables us to live above our circumstances by trusting God’s promises.
- Faith pleases God — He delights when His children trust Him.
- Faith grows as we hear and obey God’s Word.
- True faith is active — it produces love, obedience, and good works as its natural fruit.
Faith is not a feeling or a leap in the dark. It is a confident trust in the character and promises of God, based on His reliable Word.
