¶ One Another Commands
The One Another Commands are the many New Testament instructions that tell believers how to treat each other within the body of Christ.
They use the repeated phrase “one another” (or “each other”) to describe the mutual responsibilities of life together in the church.
These commands flow from the gospel and are essential to unity, maturity, and the witness of God’s people.
They turn the general call to love into specific, practical actions that build up the body.
Christianity is not a solitary faith. When God saves a person, He places that person into a family and a body. The New Testament is filled with instructions that shape how the members of that body relate to one another. These “one another” commands cover love, honor, service, forgiveness, encouragement, patience, confession, and more. They assume a shared life in which believers know each other, care for each other, and take responsibility for each other’s good. Jesus set the pattern with the new commandment to love one another as He loved us. The apostles then worked out what that love looks like in the daily relationships of the church. Together these commands form a rich picture of gospel-shaped community.

- Encouragement and Building Up – Encourage one another, build one another up, exhort one another.
- Patience and Forgiveness – Bear with one another, forgive one another, be patient with one another.
- Truth and Accountability – Speak the truth to one another, confess sins to one another, admonish one another.
- Greeting and Fellowship – Greet one another with a holy kiss, welcome one another.

The one another commands turn the gospel into a way of life together. They take the finished work of Christ and the new identity of believers and press them into the ordinary relationships of the church. Love, honor, serve, forgive, encourage, bear with, confess, pray — these are not optional extras for the highly committed. They are the normal expectations of life in the family of God. When these commands are practiced, the body is strengthened, unity is preserved, and the watching world sees something of the character of Christ. When they are neglected, the church becomes a collection of isolated individuals rather than a living body. Receive the commands as grace, not mere duty. The same Lord who commands them supplies the Spirit to obey them. Live the “one anothers” for the glory of God and the good of His people.
