God is
the eternal, all-powerful, all-knowing
Creator and Ruler of the universe.
He is
the central figure of the Bible
and the One with whom
every person must ultimately relate.
The entire story of Scripture
revolves around who God is,
what He has done,
and how He relates to people.
God is not a created being — He has always existed and will always exist. He is the source of all life, truth, and goodness. The Bible reveals God as personal, relational, and deeply involved in His creation. He is not distant or uninvolved; He is actively working out His purposes in the world and in the lives of people.
The Bible presents God as a Trinity — one God existing in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Each person is fully God, yet there is only one God.
God’s character is revealed throughout Scripture. Some of His most important attributes include:
- Holy — Completely pure and separate from sin.
- Love — God is love; He initiates relationship and acts for the good of others.
- Just — He always does what is right and will ultimately judge sin.
- Merciful and Gracious — He shows compassion and gives what is undeserved.
- Sovereign — He is in control of all things and works everything according to His will.
- Faithful — He keeps His promises and never changes.
- Omnipotent, Omniscient, and Omnipresent — All-powerful, all-knowing, and present everywhere.
From the very beginning, God created people for relationship with Himself. He made humanity in His image and placed them in a perfect environment. Even after sin entered the world and broke that relationship, God pursued people with grace and redemption.
Throughout the Bible, God reveals Himself as:
- Creator — He made all things, including people.
- Redeemer — He rescues and saves those who trust in Him.
- Father — He adopts believers into His family through Jesus Christ.
- King — He rules over all creation and will one day establish His eternal kingdom.
- Judge — He will ultimately judge all people with perfect justice.
God’s desire is for people to know Him, love Him, and live in relationship with Him.
God has made Himself known in several ways:
- Through Creation — The natural world declares God’s existence and power.
- Through Scripture — The Bible is God’s written revelation of who He is and what He has done.
- Through Jesus Christ — Jesus is the fullest and clearest revelation of God. To see Jesus is to see the Father.
- Through the Holy Spirit — The Spirit convicts, teaches, and guides people into truth.
¶ God and the Home
God designed the home as a primary place where people learn about Him and live out their faith. Parents are commanded to teach their children about God and His ways. A home centered on God becomes a place of worship, discipleship, love, and spiritual growth. The health of the home greatly impacts the spiritual health of individuals and the church.
- Genesis 1:1 — In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
- Deuteronomy 6:4-5 — Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
- John 3:16 — For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
- John 14:9 — Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?”
- 1 John 4:8 — He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
Understanding who God is has profound implications for daily life:
- It gives meaning and purpose — We were created by God and for God.
- It provides hope and security — The God who created and sustains all things is in control.
- It calls us to worship and relationship — God desires to be known and loved.
- It shapes how we live — Knowing God should affect our values, decisions, and relationships.
- It impacts the home — A right view of God leads to homes built on truth, love, and discipleship.
- It determines our eternal destiny — How we respond to God in this life determines where we will spend eternity.
God is not an abstract concept. He is the living, personal God who created us, loves us, and invites us into relationship with Himself through Jesus Christ.
