Freedom in Christ is the liberty of those who belong to the Son.
If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. The Spirit of life has set you free from the law of sin and death.
This freedom is a Person’s work, not a mood, and not a permit to return to the yoke.
Jesus told Jews who had believed Him that abiding in His word would make them free.
- They answered that they were offspring of Abraham and had never been slaves.
- He said everyone who practices sin is a slave of sin, and the slave does not remain in the house forever.
- The Son does.
- So if the Son sets you free, you are free indeed.
Freedom in Christ is release from sin’s mastery, from the law as a condemning guardian, from death’s fear, and from the present evil age.
- It is not independence from God.
- Paul calls the same people slaves of righteousness and bondservants of Christ.
- Romans 6 will not let grace become a reason to continue in sin.
- Romans 8 will not let the flesh have the last word over those who are in the Spirit.
- Galatians will not let circumcision climb back into the gospel.
Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. We all, with unveiled face, behold the glory of the Lord and are transformed.
Freedom in Christ is therefore a change of master, a change of standing, and a change of power.
The old lord is not owed another hour.
- The Son frees. Techniques do not.
- Slavery to sin can wear the clothes of heritage and religion.
- In Christ there is no condemnation. That is the courtroom side of freedom.
- The Spirit is the present power of that freedom.
- Freedom from condemnation is not freedom from holiness.
- A veil remains where the heart turns from Christ; the veil is lifted in Him.
- Stand firm. Freed people can walk back toward a yoke if they listen to another gospel.
- Set Free by the Son – The house belongs to Him; He remains forever.
- From Sin’s Slavery – No longer presenting members to unrighteousness.
- From Condemnation – No verdict left for those in Christ Jesus.
- By the Spirit – The law of the Spirit of life against the law of sin and death.
- Unveiled – Beholding the Lord; transformed from glory to glory.
- For Service – Slaves of righteousness; servants of one another in love.
- Against the Yoke – Circumcision, law-as-savior, and the flesh’s new demands.
- John 8:31-36 – “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free… Everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
- Romans 8:1-2 – “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.”
- Romans 6:6-7, 14, 17-18, 22 – “We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin… For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace… and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness… But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life.”
- Galatians 5:1 – “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.”

- 2 Corinthians 3:16-18 – “But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.”
- Galatians 1:4 – He “gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age.”
- Hebrews 2:14-15 – Through death He destroyed the one who has the power of death and delivered those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.
- Luke 4:18 – “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed.”
- Isaiah 61:1 – The same commission: liberty to the captives.
- Colossians 1:13-14 – Delivered from the domain of darkness; redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
- Revelation 1:5 – He “loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood.”
- 1 Corinthians 7:22 – “For he who was called in the Lord as a bondservant is a freedman of the Lord. Likewise he who was free when called is a bondservant of Christ.”
- Galatians 5:13 – “For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.”
- Romans 7:6 – “But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code.”
- Psalm 119:45 – “And I shall walk in a wide place, for I have sought your precepts.”
- Acts 13:38-39 – “Let it be known to you therefore, brothers, that through this man forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, and by him everyone who believes is freed from everything from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses.”

He has freed us from our sins by His blood. Abide in His word. Walk in a wide place.
