¶ Greatest Commandment
The Greatest Commandment is
Jesus’ summary of the entire Law and the Prophets:
to love the Lord your God with all your
heart, soul, mind, and strength,
and to love your neighbor as yourself.
When asked which commandment was the most important,
Jesus quoted the Shema and joined it with
the command from Leviticus to love one’s neighbor.
He declared that on these two commandments
hang all the Law and the Prophets.
This is the heart of true obedience
and the standard by which every other duty is measured.
Throughout Israel’s history the Law contained many commandments. In Jesus’ day teachers debated which were weightier. When a scribe asked Him for the most important commandment, Jesus answered by returning to the foundation: “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” He then added, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” These two commands, He said, are the greatest, and everything else in Scripture depends on them. The first safeguards exclusive, wholehearted devotion to God; the second extends that love outward to others. - Matthew 22:35-40 – “And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. ‘Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?’ And he said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. Jesus did not invent these commands; He recovered their central place and then lived them to the full. On the cross He loved the Father with perfect obedience and loved His neighbor — including His enemies — with perfect self-giving. Now, by His Spirit, He writes this same love on the hearts of His people. Every competing priority, every act of worship, and every relationship is measured by this standard. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets — and the shape of the life that glorifies God.
