The Tribulation refers to
a future seven-year period of
intense judgment, trouble, and wrath
that will come upon the earth.
It is also known as
“Daniel’s 70th Week”
and
“the time of Jacob’s trouble.”
The Bible describes the Tribulation as a time of unprecedented global distress and divine judgment. It will occur after the Rapture of the Church and before the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. During this period, God will pour out His wrath on a world that has rejected Him and His Son.
This seven-year period is divided into two halves of 3½ years each. The second half is often called the “Great Tribulation” because of its extreme intensity.
- Seven Years in Duration — Based on Daniel’s prophecy of seventy weeks (Daniel 9:24-27).
- Global Judgment — God’s wrath will be poured out through seals, trumpets, and bowls of judgment (Revelation 6–16).
- Rise of the Antichrist — A world leader will arise who will deceive many and demand worship.
- Great Persecution — Believers who come to faith during this time will face severe persecution and martyrdom.
- Natural and Supernatural Disasters — Earthquakes, wars, famines, plagues, and cosmic disturbances will occur.
- Climactic Battle — It will end with the Battle of Armageddon and the return of Jesus Christ.
- Daniel 9:27 — Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; but in the middle of the week he shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate, even until the consummation, which is determined, is poured out on the desolate.
- Matthew 24:21-22 — For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened.
- Revelation 6:17 — For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?
- Jeremiah 30:7 — Alas! For that day is great, so that none is like it; and it is the time of Jacob’s trouble, but he shall be saved out of it.
- Revelation 3:10 — Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth.
The Tribulation serves several purposes:
- To bring judgment upon a Christ-rejecting world.
- To fulfill God’s promises to Israel and bring many in Israel to faith.
- To allow people one final opportunity to repent and turn to Christ.
- To prepare the way for the return of Jesus Christ and the establishment of His Kingdom.
While the Tribulation is a future time of great trouble, it has important implications for believers today:
- It encourages us to live ready and share the gospel urgently.
- It gives us confidence that God is in control of history and will accomplish His purposes.
- It reminds us of God’s faithfulness to Israel and His promises.
- It motivates us to warn others about the coming judgment and point them to salvation in Christ.
- For those who believe the Church will be raptured before this time, it provides great comfort and hope.
The Tribulation is a sobering reminder of both God’s holiness and His mercy in offering salvation before that day arrives.
