The Second Coming refers to
the future, visible, and bodily
return of Jesus Christ
to the earth.
It is one of the most important promises in the Bible
and the great hope of the Church.
The Bible clearly teaches that Jesus will return to earth a second time. At His first coming, He came in humility as a baby in Bethlehem, lived a sinless life, died on the cross, and rose from the dead. At His Second Coming, He will return in power and great glory as King and Judge.
This event is not symbolic or spiritual only — it will be a literal, physical return that every eye will see. When Jesus returns, He will fulfill many remaining prophecies, judge the world in righteousness, and establish His Kingdom on earth.
- Visible and Glorious — Jesus will return in the clouds with power and great glory (Matthew 24:30).
- Personal and Bodily — The same Jesus who ascended into heaven will return in the same manner (Acts 1:11).
- Sudden and Unexpected — It will come like a thief in the night for those who are not watching (1 Thessalonians 5:2).
- Triumphant — He will come as King of kings and Lord of lords to defeat His enemies and reign.
- Judgment and Reward — He will judge the living and the dead and reward His faithful servants.
- Acts 1:11 — This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.
- Matthew 24:30 — Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
- Revelation 1:7 — Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.
- 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 — For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.
- Revelation 19:11-16 — Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war… And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.
The promise of the Second Coming has powerful effects on the life of a believer:
- It gives hope in the midst of a broken world.
- It motivates holy living and readiness, as we do not know the day or hour.
- It encourages faithfulness in service, knowing we will one day give an account to the returning King.
- It provides comfort when facing suffering or persecution.
- It fuels evangelism, as we want others to be ready when He comes.
The Second Coming is not something to fear for those who belong to Christ — it is the glorious event we are commanded to eagerly await and look for with joy.
