Apostasy is the act of
falling away from, abandoning, or renouncing
the faith one once professed.
The word comes from a Greek term meaning “a standing away from” or “defection.” In Scripture it refers to a deliberate turning away from the living God and from the truth of the gospel. Apostasy is treated as a serious and dangerous reality, often accompanied by warnings to remain steadfast.
Apostasy describes a decisive departure from the faith rather than ordinary struggle or temporary doubt. The Bible distinguishes between those who appear to belong to God’s people for a time and those who truly remain in Christ. Warnings against apostasy appear throughout both Testaments, calling God’s people to perseverance, watchfulness, and mutual encouragement. At the same time, Scripture affirms that those who are truly born of God will be kept by His power. The reality of apostasy serves both as a sober warning and as a call to examine the genuineness of one’s faith and to cling to Christ.

Apostasy is one of the most sober realities addressed in Scripture. It warns us that outward profession is not enough and that the heart must remain fixed on Christ. At the same time, the God who saves is also the God who keeps. The warnings are real and must be heeded, yet they drive the true believer not to despair but to deeper dependence on the Lord who is able to keep us from stumbling and to present us blameless before the presence of His glory with great joy.
