Edify means
to build up, strengthen,
instruct, or promote
the spiritual growth
of another person.
It is the action
of helping someone grow
in their faith, character, and walk with God.
¶ Biblical Understanding of Edify
The word “edify” comes from the same Greek root as “edification” (oikodomeo), which means “to build a house.” In the New Testament, it is frequently used as a command for how believers should treat one another.
To edify someone is to use our words, actions, and spiritual gifts in a way that strengthens their faith and helps them grow spiritually. It is the opposite of discouraging, tearing down, or causing others to stumble.
Edifying others is one of the primary responsibilities of every Christian and a key purpose of the church. The goal of Christian fellowship, teaching, and conversation should be to build people up rather than to tear them down.
- 1 Thessalonians 5:11 — Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.
- Romans 14:19 — Therefore let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another.
- 1 Corinthians 10:23 — All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify.
- Ephesians 4:29 — Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.
- 1 Corinthians 14:12 — Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel.
Understanding what it means to edify has direct application in daily Christian living:
- Our words should be chosen carefully to build others up rather than discourage them.
- When we gather as a church, the focus should be on mutually strengthening one another.
- We should use our spiritual gifts and abilities to edify others, not to draw attention to ourselves.
- Edifying others requires love and wisdom — we seek to strengthen them in ways that are helpful and appropriate.
- It is especially important to edify those who are young in the faith, struggling, or discouraged.
- We should regularly ask ourselves: “Is what I am about to say or do going to edify this person?”
To edify someone is to actively participate in their spiritual growth. It is one of the most practical and loving things we can do as followers of Christ.
