Spiritual Gifts are
special abilities given by the Holy Spirit
to every believer
for the purpose of serving others
and building up the body of Christ.
They are supernatural enablements
distributed according to God’s will,
not based on natural talent or merit.
¶ Biblical Understanding of Spiritual Gifts
Spiritual gifts are not the same as natural talents or abilities, although God can use and enhance natural gifts through the Spirit. They are given specifically by the Holy Spirit after a person becomes a believer.
The New Testament teaches that every Christian has at least one spiritual gift. These gifts are diverse, but they are all given for the same purpose: the edification (building up) of the church and the advancement of God’s kingdom.
No single gift is more important than another. Each gift is valuable and needed for the healthy functioning of the body of Christ.
The primary purposes of spiritual gifts are:
- To edify (build up) the church.
- To equip believers for ministry and service.
- To strengthen and encourage fellow believers.
- To glorify God through the effective working of His Spirit in the body.
Spiritual gifts are not given for personal recognition or self-promotion. They are given to serve others and strengthen the church.
- 1 Corinthians 12:4-7 — There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all.

- Ephesians 4:11-12 — And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.
- 1 Peter 4:10 — As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
- 1 Corinthians 12:11 — But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.
Understanding spiritual gifts has important implications for believers:
- Every Christian has been gifted by the Holy Spirit and has a role to play in the church.
- We should discover and develop our spiritual gifts and use them faithfully.
- Gifts are given for service, not for status or personal glory.
- The church functions best when every member uses their gifts.
- We should appreciate the different gifts in others rather than comparing or competing.
- Using our gifts brings fulfillment and contributes to the growth and health of the body of Christ.
Spiritual gifts are a wonderful expression of God’s grace. They enable the church to function effectively and allow every believer to participate in the work of building up the body of Christ.
