Justification is
the act of God
by which He declares
a sinner to be righteous
in His sight.
It is a legal term
meaning that God acquits the guilty
and credits them with
the perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ.
¶ Biblical Understanding of Justification
Justification is not something we achieve by good works or religious effort. It is a gift of God’s grace. When a person puts their faith in Jesus Christ, God no longer sees them as guilty. Instead, He sees them as righteous because the righteousness of Christ has been credited (imputed) to them.
Justification is a one-time, complete act. It happens the moment a person believes in Jesus. It is not a process, but an instantaneous declaration by God.
Justification occurs through faith alone in Christ alone.
- We are justified by grace (it is undeserved).
- We are justified through faith (trusting in Jesus’ finished work).
- We are justified because of Christ’s righteousness (not our own).
It is sometimes described as: God treats us “just-as-if” we had never sinned — and even better, as if we had perfectly kept His law.
- Romans 3:24 — Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.
- Romans 5:1 — Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
- Romans 5:9 — Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.
- Romans 8:1 — There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
- Galatians 2:16 — Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.
- 2 Corinthians 5:21 — For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Understanding justification brings great freedom and assurance to believers:
- It removes guilt and condemnation — there is now no condemnation for those in Christ.
- It gives peace with God — we are no longer enemies of God but at peace with Him.
- It provides security — justification is a completed work, not something we maintain by our effort.
- It produces humility — we cannot boast in our own righteousness.
- It motivates grateful living — we serve God out of love and thankfulness, not to earn His favor.
Justification is one of the greatest blessings of salvation. It means that when God looks at a believer, He sees the perfect righteousness of His Son.
