Light in Scripture is God’s first gift in creation, His own nature, and the name of His Son.
God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all.
Jesus said, I am the light of the world.
Those who follow Him walk in the light, become children of light, and will need no sun in the city where the Lamb is the lamp.
Light begins as a word: Let there be light. God separates it from darkness and calls it good. The lights in the sky are given later for signs and seasons, but light itself is older in the story than the sun. From there the word rises. The Lord is my light and my salvation. In His light we see light. His word is a lamp to the feet. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.
- John says that in the Word was life, and the life was the light of men; the true light was coming into the world.
- Jesus claims the title. He tells the church they are the light of the world, a city on a hill.
- Paul says they were darkness and are now light in the Lord.
- John says if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship, and the blood of Jesus cleanses us.
At the end there is no night. Glory gives the light. The Lamb is the lamp. Light is therefore physical, moral, and personal. It exposes. It guides. It saves. It is not a mood. It is God making Himself known and making a people who can see.
