Let There Be Light is the first spoken command in Scripture.
God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
He saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness.
Paul said that same God has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
Genesis opens with a formless deep and darkness over the face of the waters. The Spirit of God is hovering. Then God speaks. Light comes before the sun is named on the fourth day. The light is not a lamp man lit. It is the answer of creation to the Word. God names, divides, and calls it good. The rest of the Bible never forgets that beginning.
The Lord is light, and in Him is no darkness at all. He wraps Himself in light as with a garment. He leads with a pillar of fire. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. Jesus said, I am the light of the world. At the new creation there will be no night, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. Between first day and last city stands the gospel: the God who said “Let light shine out of darkness” has spoken again. Hearts that were blind receive the knowledge of His glory in the face of Christ. The old command is still the pattern of mercy.

That same God has shone in our hearts. The glory is in the face of Jesus Christ.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
You were darkness. Now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.
I am the light of the world. Follow Him and you will not walk in the dark.
The city will need no sun. The Lamb is its lamp. Night will be no more.
