The Cross refers to
the wooden instrument on which
Jesus Christ was crucified.
It is the central symbol of
the Christian faith
and represents the place where
Jesus died to pay for the sins of the world.
The cross is not merely a historical event or a religious symbol. It is the place where God’s justice and mercy met. On the cross, Jesus bore the punishment for our sins so that we could be forgiven and reconciled to God.
The apostle Paul wrote that the message of the cross is “the power of God to those who are being saved” (1 Corinthians 1:18). What looked like weakness and defeat to the world was actually the greatest demonstration of God’s power, love, and wisdom.
At the cross, several profound things took place:
- Substitution — Jesus died in our place, taking the penalty we deserved.
- Propitiation — God’s righteous wrath against sin was satisfied.
- Redemption — We were bought back from slavery to sin.
- Reconciliation — The barrier between God and humanity was removed.
- Victory over Sin and Death — Through His death, Jesus defeated the power of sin and the devil.
The cross was not an accident or a tragedy. It was the planned purpose of God from before the foundation of the world.
- 1 Corinthians 1:18 — For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
- Galatians 6:14 — But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.
- Colossians 2:14 — Having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.
- 1 Peter 2:24 — Who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.
- Ephesians 2:16 — And that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity.
- John 12:32-33 — And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself. This He said, signifying by what death He would die.
The cross has life-changing meaning for every believer:
- It is the only way of salvation — There is no other path to God.
- It demonstrates the depth of God’s love — “God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).
- It calls us to deny ourselves — Jesus said, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me” (Luke 9:23).
- It gives us victory over sin — Because of the cross, sin no longer has dominion over us.
- It produces humility — We have nothing to boast in except the cross of Christ.
- It motivates worship and gratitude — The cross should lead us to love and serve the One who died for us.
The cross is both the foundation of our faith and the pattern for our lives. We are saved by the cross, and we are called to live with the same spirit of self-sacrifice and obedience that Jesus demonstrated there.
