The death of Jesus on the cross is
the central event in God’s plan of redemption.
Jesus willingly gave His life as a sacrifice for the sins of the world.
Jesus was crucified under the Roman governor Pontius Pilate around A.D. 30–33. He was betrayed, falsely accused, beaten, and nailed to a cross outside Jerusalem. His death was real, public, and brutal. The Roman soldiers confirmed His death, and He was buried in a tomb.
The Bible teaches that Jesus’ death was far more than a tragic execution. It was a substitutionary sacrifice. He died in the place of sinners, bearing the penalty and wrath that we deserved.
Through His death, Jesus accomplished several vital things:
- Atonement — He made reconciliation between God and humanity possible.
- Propitiation — He satisfied the righteous wrath of God against sin.
- Redemption — He paid the price to set sinners free.
- Forgiveness — His blood made forgiveness available to all who believe.
Jesus’ death was the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy and the central theme of the gospel.
- Isaiah 53:5-6 — But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
- John 19:30 — So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
- Romans 5:8 — But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
- 1 Peter 2:24 — Who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.
- Ephesians 1:7 — In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.
- 2 Corinthians 5:21 — For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Because God is holy and just, sin must be punished. Humanity could not pay the debt we owed. Only a perfect, sinless substitute could satisfy God’s justice. Jesus, being both fully God and fully man, was the only one qualified to die in our place.
His death was voluntary. Jesus said, “No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself” (John 10:18). He went to the cross out of love and obedience to the Father.
The death of Jesus has profound meaning for believers:
- It shows the depth of God’s love — He gave His only Son for us.
- It provides complete forgiveness for all who trust in Him.
- It removes guilt and condemnation for those who believe.
- It calls us to live for Him who died for us.
- It gives us boldness to approach God, knowing the way has been opened through the cross.
The death of Jesus is not just a historical event — it is the foundation of our salvation and the reason we can have peace with God.
