El Elyon is
a Hebrew title for God meaning
“God Most High” or “Most High God.”
It emphasizes God’s supreme exaltation
and absolute sovereignty over
all creation, all nations, and every other power.
This name presents God as
the One who is exalted far above
every ruler, authority, and spiritual force.
The title combines El (God) with Elyon, which means “Most High” or “Highest.” Together they declare that God is the supreme authority in the universe. There is no one above Him, no one equal to Him, and no realm outside His rule.

The name El Elyon first appears in Genesis 14 in connection with Melchizedek, king of Salem and “priest of God Most High.” After Abram’s victory over the kings, Melchizedek blesses him with these words:
“Blessed be Abram by God Most High [El Elyon], Possessor of heaven and earth; and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!” (Genesis 14:19-20)
Abram then identifies the Lord (Yahweh) with El Elyon, saying he has sworn an oath to “the Lord, God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth” (Genesis 14:22). From the beginning, El Elyon is linked both to God’s supreme ownership of all things and to His personal relationship with His people.

For the believer this is a source of deep security: the God who has entered into covenant with His people is also the sovereign Ruler of the universe. At the same time, the title calls for humility and worship. The Most High is worthy of the highest honor and complete allegiance.
El Elyon reveals God as the Most High, the supreme Ruler over heaven and earth. First seen in the blessing of Melchizedek and the faith of Abram, this name continues to assure God’s people that the One who cares for them is also the sovereign Lord over all powers and authorities. He is high above every rival, and His reign can never be overthrown.
