In the Bible,
names are never merely labels.
They reveal
character, authority, and relationship.
The many names and titles of God
given in Scripture
are one of the primary ways
God makes Himself known.
Each name highlights a different aspect
of who He is
and how He relates to His people.
Together they form
a rich portrait of the one true God.
God Himself places great weight on His name. He declares that He is jealous for His holy name (Ezekiel 39:25) and that His name is to be hallowed (Matthew 6:9). To know God’s names is to know God more truly. The various names do not describe different gods, but different facets of the one God who is infinite in His perfections.
YHWH (Yahweh / LORD) The personal covenant name of God, revealed especially in Exodus 3:14-15 (“I AM WHO I AM”). In most English Bibles it is written as LORD in capital letters. It speaks of God’s self-existence, eternal being, and covenant faithfulness.
Elohim A plural form used with singular verbs, emphasizing God’s majesty, power, and the fullness of His being. It is the first name for God appearing in Scripture (Genesis 1:1).
Adonai Means “Lord” or “Master” and emphasizes God’s authority and ownership. Often used by speakers who wished to avoid pronouncing the sacred name YHWH.
El Shaddai Usually translated “God Almighty.” It points to God’s all-sufficient power and His ability to bless and supply (Genesis 17:1; Exodus 6:3).
El Elyon “God Most High.” This title stresses God’s supreme exaltation and sovereignty over all things (Genesis 14:18-22; Psalm 78:35).
El Olam “Everlasting God” or “Eternal God” (Genesis 21:33; Isaiah 40:28).
