In the fullness of time the Son of God took on flesh, lived in perfect obedience, and then willingly went to the cross. There He bore the curse of the law, became sin for His people, and offered Himself as a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma. The cross is both the greatest display of human wickedness and the greatest display of divine love and wisdom. On it justice and mercy meet: the penalty of sin is fully paid, and the free gift of righteousness is secured for all who believe. The apostles therefore determined to know nothing except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. What the world counts as foolishness and weakness is the power and wisdom of God. At the cross the record of debt was nailed, the powers of darkness were disarmed, and peace with God was purchased. Nothing may be added to it; nothing can replace it. Boast only in the cross. Live as one crucified with Christ and raised to new life. The cross is not the end of the story — the risen Christ is seated at the right hand of God — yet every blessing of the Christian life flows from that finished work. Look to the cross, rest in the cross, and glory in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.
