The Gospel
(from the Greek word euangelion)
means “good news.”
It is the message of
salvation through Jesus Christ
—
the central message of the Bible
and the heart of the Christian faith.
¶ Biblical Understanding of the Gospel
The Gospel is not a set of rules to follow or a moral code to live by. It is the announcement of what God has done through Jesus Christ to rescue sinners and reconcile them to Himself.
The Gospel is both simple and profound. It centers on the person and work of Jesus — specifically His death for our sins, His burial, and His resurrection from the dead. This message is the power of God unto salvation for everyone who believes.
The Gospel can be summarized in four key points:
- God is holy and just — All people have sinned and fall short of God’s glory.
- Jesus Christ died for our sins — He took our place and paid the penalty we deserved.
- Jesus rose from the dead — His resurrection proves that His sacrifice was accepted and that He has victory over sin and death.
- Salvation is received by faith — Anyone who repents and believes in Jesus receives forgiveness and eternal life as a gift of grace.
- 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 — Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.
- Romans 1:16 — For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.
- Ephesians 2:8-9 — For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.
- John 3:16 — For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
- Romans 10:9 — That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
The Gospel is received by:
- Repentance — Turning from sin and turning to God.
- Faith — Trusting in Jesus Christ alone for salvation.
It is not earned by good works, religious rituals, or moral effort. It is a free gift offered to all who will believe.
The Gospel is not just something to believe once — it is the message that transforms lives and should shape everything we do:
- It brings forgiveness and peace with God.
- It gives hope and purpose in life.
- It calls believers to share the good news with others.
- It provides the foundation for Christian living and service.
- It reminds us that salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.
The Gospel is the greatest news the world has ever heard — that sinners can be forgiven and reconciled to God through the finished work of Jesus Christ.
