The resurrection of Jesus is
the event in which
Jesus Christ rose bodily from the dead
on the third day
after His crucifixion.
It is the most important event in human history
and the cornerstone of the Christian faith.
After Jesus was crucified and buried, His tomb was found empty on the third day. He appeared alive to His disciples and to many others over a period of forty days. These appearances were physical — He could be seen, touched, and recognized. He ate with them and taught them before ascending into heaven.
The resurrection was not a spiritual vision or metaphor. Jesus rose with a real, glorified body. The empty tomb and the many eyewitnesses provide strong historical evidence for this event.
The resurrection of Jesus is essential to the Christian faith for several reasons:
- Proof of His Deity — The resurrection declared Jesus to be the Son of God with power.
- Validation of His Sacrifice — It proved that God the Father accepted Jesus’ death as full payment for sin.
- Victory Over Death — Jesus defeated death and the grave.
- Foundation of Salvation — Without the resurrection, there would be no gospel and no salvation.
- Guarantee for Believers — Because He rose, all who believe in Him will also be raised to eternal life.
The apostle Paul wrote that if Christ has not been raised, our faith is futile and we are still in our sins.
- 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 — For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.
- Romans 4:25 — Who was delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our justification.
- Romans 10:9 — That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
- 1 Corinthians 15:17 — And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins!
- John 11:25 — Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.”
- Acts 2:24 — Whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it.
The resurrection of Jesus has powerful implications for every believer:
- It gives assurance that our sins are forgiven and that we have been justified before God.
- It provides hope in the face of death — because Jesus rose, we too will rise.
- It calls us to live for Him who died and rose again for us.
- It strengthens our faith, knowing that the same power that raised Jesus is available to us.
- It motivates us to share the gospel, because the resurrection is central to the good news.
The resurrection is not just a past event — it is the living reality that gives meaning, hope, and power to the Christian life today.
