New Cloth on an Old Garment is the saying of Jesus about a patch that does not belong.
No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment,

The scribes and John’s disciples wanted to know why Jesus’ men did not fast as they did. He answered with the bridegroom: while He is with them, they cannot mourn. Then two pictures: cloth and skins. An old coat has already found its shape. New, unshrunk cloth is still alive. Sew them together and the first wash will pull. The hole is worse than before.
Luke makes it sharper. You ruin two garments: you cut the new to save the old, and neither looks right.

- The new is the kingdom in the Bridegroom Himself.
- He did not come to stitch a better square onto a worn system.
- He came with new cloth, new wine, a new covenant.

- It is the whole garment the old was aiming at.
A church that tries to keep Jesus as an improvement panel on self-made religion will watch the tear run. The old is good, people say, because it is familiar. He did not ask them to pour Him into that familiarity. He asked them to put on the new.
- The tear gets worse. Mixing on purpose is not caution. It is damage.
- Luke’s version wastes the new to rescue the old. That is the cost of the patch.
