Fasting is going without food for a time in order to seek God.
Jesus said when you fast, not if.
He also said the wedding guests cannot mourn while the Bridegroom is with them.
The days will come when He is taken away, and then they will fast.
The point is the Lord, not the empty plate.
An empty plate with a proud face is already full of itself.
Israel fasted in grief, in danger, and on the Day of Atonement. Nineveh fasted and God relented. David fasted for the child. Esther asked for a fast before she went to the king. The prophets had to strip the practice when it became theater: you fast and you strike with a wicked fist; is this the fast I choose? Isaiah pointed to loosing bonds, sharing bread, bringing the poor home.
Jesus assumed His people would fast, and He hid it. Anoint your head. Wash your face. Your Father who sees in secret will reward you. He refused the comparison game of John’s disciples and the Pharisees. The Bridegroom is here. Mourning can wait. After the cross and the going away, the church fasts again. Antioch laid hands on Barnabas and Saul after fasting. Jesus Himself fasted forty days and met the tempter with the Word: man shall not live by bread alone.
Fasting is not a lever that makes God pay.
- It is a way of saying this hunger is smaller than that need.
- It trains the body to wait.
- It clears a space for prayer.
- It can be abused into a score.
The Father still sees the secret one.
- When you fast means the practice is expected, not displayed.
- The Bridegroom saying sets the time and the tone. Presence first; mourning after He is taken.
- Secret is the rule against theater.
- The fast God chooses includes mercy to the poor, not only skipped meals.
- Jesus fasted and then fought with Scripture, not with emptiness as magic.
- The church in Acts fasts when it sends and seeks.
- An empty stomach is not righteousness. A full one is not sin. The heart is the field.
- Seeking God – Hunger aimed at Him, not at self-image.
- Secret – Washed face; Father who sees.
- Bridegroom – No mourning while He is present in that first sense; fasting after He is taken.
- Chosen Fast – Justice and bread for the hungry joined to the fast.
- Word over Bread – Man lives by what God speaks.

- Not a Score – Hypocrites already have their reward.
- Matthew 6:16-18 – “And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”
