Resurrection refers to
the raising of the dead to life again
by the power of God.
In the Bible,
it is a central doctrine that includes both
the resurrection of Jesus Christ
and the future resurrection of all people.
¶ Biblical Understanding of Resurrection
The Bible teaches that resurrection is not merely a spiritual concept but involves the raising of the body to a new, transformed state of life. It is a reversal of death and a demonstration of God’s power over the grave.
The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the foundation of the Christian faith. Because He rose from the dead, believers have the assurance that they too will be raised. The Bible also speaks of a future general resurrection in which all the dead will be raised — some to eternal life and others to judgment.
Jesus’ resurrection is the most important event in history. After being crucified and buried, He rose bodily from the dead on the third day. His resurrection:
- Proved that He is the Son of God
- Confirmed that His sacrifice for sin was accepted by the Father
- Defeated death and the power of sin
- Guarantees the future resurrection of believers
Without the resurrection of Jesus, the Christian faith would have no foundation.
The Bible teaches that there will be a future resurrection of all people:
- Believers will be raised to eternal life, glory, and fellowship with God. Their bodies will be transformed into glorious, immortal bodies.
- Unbelievers will be raised to face judgment.
The resurrection of believers is often called the “first resurrection” or the resurrection of the righteous. It is a source of great hope and comfort for those who trust in Christ.
- 1 Corinthians 15:20-22 — But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.
- John 11:25-26 — Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
- 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 — For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.
- Revelation 20:5-6 — But the rest of the dead did not live again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power…
- Philippians 3:20-21 — For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.
The truth of the resurrection has powerful implications for believers:
- It gives hope in the face of death. Believers do not grieve as those who have no hope.
- It motivates holy living, knowing that we will one day stand before the Lord in resurrected bodies.
- It provides comfort when Christians lose loved ones who have died in Christ.
- It assures us that death is not the end, but the doorway to eternal life with God.
- It strengthens our faith, because the same power that raised Jesus from the dead is at work in us.
The resurrection is not just a future event — it is the foundation of present hope and the guarantee of our future glory.
