The Living Word is a title
that refers first and foremost to Jesus Christ,
the eternal Word of God
who became flesh.
It also describes the nature of Scripture,
which is living and active,
sharper than any two-edged sword.
In both senses the phrase emphasizes that
God’s communication is not static or dead
but powerful, personal, and life-giving.
Christ is the Living Word in person;
Scripture is the Living Word in written form.
The concept of the Living Word holds together two closely related truths. In the opening of John’s Gospel, Jesus is revealed as the Word (Logos) who was with God in the beginning, who was God, and who became flesh and dwelt among us. He is the full and final expression of the Father — the Living Word who perfectly communicates God’s character and will. At the same time, the written Scriptures are described as living and active, the Spirit-breathed instrument through which the Living Word continues to speak, convict, and give life. Together they show that God has not left His people with a silent book or a distant Christ, but with a vibrant, powerful revelation that still speaks today.

To receive the Living Word is to come to Jesus Himself and to submit to the Scriptures that bear witness to Him. In a world of temporary and powerless words, the Living Word stands forever and still speaks with life-giving power.
