John the Baptist was
the prophet sent by God
to prepare the way for
the coming of Jesus Christ.
He was the son of Zechariah and Elizabeth,
a relative of Mary,
and the last and greatest of
the Old Testament-style prophets.
Jesus Himself said that
among those born of women,
no one greater than John had arisen
(Matthew 11:11).
John’s birth was announced by the angel Gabriel to his father Zechariah while he was serving in the temple (Luke 1:5-25). Elizabeth was barren and advanced in years, making John’s birth a miraculous work of God. He was filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother’s womb (Luke 1:15).
John grew up in the wilderness and began his public ministry in the region around the Jordan River. He lived a simple and austere life, wearing clothing of camel’s hair and eating locusts and wild honey (Matthew 3:4).
John’s primary mission was to prepare the people for the coming of the Messiah. He preached a message of repentance and baptized those who responded:
“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matthew 3:2)
He fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah 40:3:
“The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; make his paths straight.’”
John baptized many people in the Jordan River as a sign of repentance. When Jesus came to be baptized, John initially hesitated, recognizing Jesus’ superiority, but then baptized Him in obedience (Matthew 3:13-17).
John publicly identified Jesus as “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29) and testified that Jesus was the Son of God.
John’s bold preaching against sin eventually led to his imprisonment. He confronted Herod Antipas for taking his brother’s wife, Herodias (Matthew 14:3-4). At the request of Herodias’s daughter, Herod had John beheaded in prison (Matthew 14:6-12).
Even in prison, John sent disciples to Jesus to confirm that He was the Coming One (Matthew 11:2-6). Jesus responded by affirming John’s greatness and role in God’s plan.
John the Baptist holds a unique place in redemptive history:
John the Baptist is a powerful example of a life fully devoted to preparing the way for Christ. He lived with humility, boldness, and single-minded focus on pointing others to Jesus. His famous words remain a model for every believer: “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30).
